What is a Dementia Friend?
Dementia Friends is part of a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. By learning more about dementia, they can help their community to become dementia friendly and support those with the condition more effectively.
Becoming a Dementia Friend simply means learning more about dementia. Really beginning to understand what it means to have dementia by putting yourself in the shoes of someone living with the condition. More than that, it means you can turn your understanding into action.
So many people in society, even those directly affected, don’t understand the condition they are living with. Raising awareness and understanding improves the lives of all affected.
How to become a dementia friend?
Dementia Friends is for anyone who wishes to take part in helping those with the condition in their community. There are two ways to become a Dementia Friend.
- Watch a short video about three people’s experiences of dementia.
- Attend a short virtual in-person session with a Dementia Ambassador.

What are Dementia Friends Ambassadors?
A Dementia Friends Ambassador (formerly known as Dementia Friends Champion) continues to raise awareness about dementia by delivering Dementia Friends Sessions. Ambassadors will also raise the Alzheimer’s Society’s profile in the local community. It’s important people know about the Alzheimer’s Society as they are a vital source of information and support.
